Join us for the opening reception of the solo exhibition ‘When a Door Opens Windows Do Too’ featuring Jude Anogwih. Reception will be held Thursday, July 22nd at 6 pm in our new Create Space at Gallery 905!
"Jude Anogwih is an artist who strives to bend the conventional definition of art as “aesthetically pleasing” by instead conceptualizing the artistic process as an authentic expression of thoughts, experiences and aspirations..." Ashley Pemberton, (Lead Arts & Culture Writer). https://mercercluster.com/.../mceachern-holds-thesis.../
Anogwih's work is characterized by experimental video, drawing, painting, and installation.
Anogwih said “I am intentionally looking into the intra/interfaces between the edge and the center of painting and a painting; the rhetoric of mark making, lapping and overlapping constraints and speculations with tapes and lines.” The resulting artistic outcome tells stories of openness, connectivity and continuity that link interchanges of construction, communality, (dis)location, intents, dreams and aspirations. These, he retraces, tapes, draws, paints and assembles into dense, abundant layers of excess marks that build up with time. Appropriating conventional art processes with references from personal travels, assumptions and encounters, Anogwih's work explores, experimentally, social issues of shelter, migration, movement, mobility and community that constantly retrace familiar encounters, thoughts and experiences.
In this summer solo exhibition at the Art Revive's Create Space (Selma, Alabama), titled When A Door Opens, Windows Do Too. No. 2 (2021), works presented continue a visual conversation from a selection of several series of drawings and paintings from 2009 to date. Utilizing experimental material components including duct tapes this exhibition intervenes to conceptually visualize spaces of constraint and freedom. It conceptualizes a situation of vigorous, spontaneous and concentrated mixing of multidimensional media and concepts to address a phenomenon Walter Benjamin likens to ‘bridging the gap between singularity and totality, specificity and the world.’
When A Door Opens, Windows Do Too No.1 (2020) was realized in the exhibition TAUT at the Mercer University McEachern Art Center, Macon, Georgia.
