Come join us in the Honk 4 Voting Rights (H4VR) Caravan scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 6th, 2020. H4VR is to commemorate the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and encourage residents of Selma, AL to register to vote.
This is a great opportunity to engage with the community in a safe, socially distant way, while encouraging participation in our democratic system. You are encouraged to join the caravan with vehicles, signs, noisemakers, etc., and to please help us to let people know about the event by sharing the flyers and Facebook event page.

The Olde Town Association Political Forums are scheduled for 5:30 pm at Heritage Village on Thursday, 7/30/20, (Mayoral), and Thursday, 8/6/20, (Council President and Ward 3 candidates). The public should bring their lawn chairs and masks and there will be a microphone so everyone can hear. People need to be socially distanced. Each candidate will have 15 min to speak. Estate Planning for Landowners Online Workshop
Alabama Extension is offering a two-hour workshop on estate planning for landowners. This workshop is being offered through Zoom. It has also been approved for two hours of Category 1 CFE by the Society of American Foresters. There are two dates available to choose from for this workshop – July 30 and August 18. Each workshop lasts from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
Attendance for each date is limited and registration is required. There is a $10 registration fee.

SELMA - Regional Brochure Launch
The Selma/Blackbelt Sites will host a community event on Sunday, August 23, at 4:00 PM via Zoom to celebrate and publicize a brochure that features all of the Selma/Blackbelt sites. Dr. Verdell Lett Dawson of Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church Selma was responsible for that grant that was funded by the Blackbelt Community Foundation. One of the stipulations was that a community event would be held to make the public aware of the grant and its purpose. Invitations will be sent to stakeholders and others containing the Zoom link and access details.

In March, the Get Fit Selma! Planning Committee made the decision to cancel its 8th Annual Health & Wellness Festival due to COVID-19. However, lead medical professionals, Cassandra Ford, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, and Janice Parker, CRNP, MS, DNP-BC, have created a webinar series to be presented August 29, September 12 and September 19,, 2020 with the goal of providing virtual support to the public concerning coronavirus and health and wellness during this pandemic. David McCormack, MBA, CEO Vaughan Regional Medical Center and Justine Maxwell, DrPH, MPH, Epidemiology, Tennessee Department of Health, will partner on a webinar this Saturday, produced by Get Fit Selma! 2020, with the support of the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation, Inc. and sponsored by Sarrell Dental & Eye and DentaQuest Corporation. They will speak to the challenges faced by rural healthcare in a pandemic and answer questions about what individuals can do to protect their own health and that of their families.

David McCormack has made his name among healthcare providers in Selma and Dallas County as an advocate for access to healthcare. He has been the CEO of Vaughan Regional Medical Center since 2016 and lauds the medical professionals at Vaughan for their self-sacrifice and service.
McCormack sees challenges as opportunities; articulates clear vision; and secures buy-in for strategic plans from key stakeholders throughout the organization. He is a high-energy, hands-on leader known for making rounds throughout the hospital to solve issues in real-time and establish relationships from the ER to the C-suite. McCormack received his BA in Accounting at Auburn University and his MBA at Florida Atlantic University in Accounting and Business Management.
Dr. Maxwell is from Selma, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Leroy Maxwell. She is an epidemiologist by training and serves as an Informatician with the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) Office of Informatics and Analytics. In this role, she leads the strategic public health reporting and informatics unit supporting department-wide public health information system interoperability, cross-cutting informatics projects, and Tennessee’s drug overdose reporting program. Prior to this position, Dr. Maxwell served as an Epidemiologist within TDH’s Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness division.
Dr. Maxwell holds a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology from Emory University, a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology from George Washington University, and a Doctor of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Kentucky. She is currently a PhD student in Health Informatics, Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
