Selma Interpretive Center Expansion Completion and Public Opening
Selma, AL - The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail expansion is complete and will be opening to the public on February 23, 2017. The renovation is the 2nd phase of the ongoing expansion of the Selma Interpretive Center in Selma, AL. The development completed the restoration of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the center that originally opened on May 6, 2011. The newly designed temporary exhibits will be featured on the completed floors until the permanent exhibits are finished. The center will resume showing the park film “Never Lose Sight of Freedom.”
“I am beyond thrilled that the citizens of my home town will soon have the opportunity to see the newly expanded Selma Interpretive Center. The completion of this phase of the building expansion symbolizes another step forward for the city of Selma. I am grateful to the City, the National Park Service, and the Alabama Department of Transportation for making this expansion possible,” said Alabama Congressional Representative Terri Sewell.
The Selma Interpretive Center will host an open house from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on
February 23, 2017. A small welcome reception and program will take place on the 3rd floor of the center to formally announce the opening at 2:00 p.m. and will feature Alabama Congressional Representative Terri Sewell, City of Selma Mayor Darrio Melton, Southeast Deputy Regional Director Sherri Fields and Superintendent Sandra Taylor.
This event is open to the public and free of charge.
